for when you keep avoiding something you know you need to face

You know what it is. You've known for a while. You've built your whole routine around not thinking about it, a very sophisticated, very exhausting architecture of distraction.

The thing isn't getting smaller. You are. Each time you circle it without looking, you give it a little more power. The avoidance has become heavier than the thing itself.

You're not protecting yourself. You're just postponing yourself.

These are for the moment when you're almost ready to look at it.

Avoidance is just fear with better manners. It lets you feel like you're coping while making sure nothing changes.

At some point the avoiding becomes the thing you're carrying. It gets heavier than whatever you were avoiding in the first place.

The only way out is through.

Robert Frost

The thing doesn't get easier with distance. You just get more practiced at the distance.
